As the problem related to dampness are complex the book first of all deals with the properties of the more common building materials. Then it considers the performance of the main building elements (roofs, walls and floors) in resisting dampness. The particular problem of condensation and rising damp are looked at in detail and a chapter on diagnosis provides a handy checklist to the likely causes of the main dampness problems. Advantages and drawbacks of various remedial measures are examined. Annexes: 1) portland cement; sulphate resisting cement; 3) lime manufacture; 4) gymsum plaster; 5) test papers for chlorides; 6) procedure for the analysis of walls for rising dampness and the determination of hygroscopic and capillary moisture. Glossary. Bibligraphy (65 entries and list of british standards), numerous diagrams tables, graphs. -- ICCROM
