The structure-function relationships of the two proteins P51 and P42 comprising the spore associated binary toxin ofB. sphaericuswere investigated. A new variant of the P42 gene sequence was isolated from a strain ofB. sphaericuswhich shows reduced toxicity againstAnopheles stephensiandCulex quinquefasciatuslarvae compared to other strains. Since the P51 component is thought to be involved in the binding of the toxin to the mosquito gut, it is important to characterise the binary toxin proteins in order to understand the relationship between binary toxin sequence and toxicity in each strain. The EMBL/GenBank/DDBJ accession numbers of the new nucleotide sequences are Y13311 and Y13320.
