Adrenocorticotrophin (ACTH) release is under the control of two temporally and dynamically distinct phases of corticosteroid feedback inhibition: a fast rate-sensitive feedback and a delayed or proportional feedback (Jones, Hilhouse and Burden 1977). Whereas many experiments have dealt with feedback control by exogenous corticosteroids (Dallman and Yates 1969; Abe and Critchlow 1977), evidence that physiological corticosteroids secreted in response to a stressor will modify subsequent stress responses is still scant. Recent studies, in which animals were subjected to two sequential stimuli, support the hypotheses that a facilitatory effect of stressors balances their feedback-inhibitory effect (Dallman and Jones 1973; Gann, Cryer and Pirkle 1977; Le Mevel, Abitbol, Beraud and Maniey 1979).
