Do patients listen when nurses advise them to stop smoking? And do they quit? A number of recent studies show that nurses can have a powerful influence on helping patients to quit smoking and to remain nonsmokers.A physician-nurse team in California determined the effectiveness of a nurse-managed intervention for smoking cessation in 130 patients who were smokers and were hospitalized for acute myocardial infarction (MI)(Ann. Intern. Med. 113 [2]: 118-122, July 15, 1990). The patients were randomly assigned to receive the intervention or usual care.
