The formation of silver whiskers on the surface of a pressed tablet of α-Ag2S has been studied. Preferential nucleation of a small number of whiskers was achieved by a novel method involving the direction of a beam of silver vapour on to the surface of the α-Ag2S. These whiskers were then grown and redissolved electrochemically and the process studied photomicrographically. Current/potential curves indicated that silver crossed the silver whisker/α-Ag2S interface at current densities as large as 8.7 A cm−2with overpotentials < 5 mV at 300°C. The shapes of the growth and dissolution curves are compatible with the operation of a dislocation mechanism in these processes.
