A discussion of a paper with the aforementioned title by R.L. Santoni et al., published in this journal (Volume 127, Number 3, March 2001), is provided. The original paper presented an experimental study involving unconfined compression tests for evaluating: 1) the relative performance of various fibers used to stabilize granular pavement subgrade materials, and 2) the effect of different fiber and mix variables on the performance of fiber-stabilized sand. The discusser commends the authors for their attempts to isolate and quantify the effects of important variables as fiber content, type, length, and denier on the basis of a simple lab test such as the unconfined compression test, and offers comments regarding the experimental and analysis methods used in their research. Clarifications are requested by the discusser from the authors, and these are provided in closure.
