MATERIALS AND METHODSOrgunkma. Fifteen of the pasteurella-like strains were isolated from routine sputum specimens examined at the Manchester Public Health Laboratory; they were found in about 1 per cent. of the specimens received during 8 months. In the same period true P. aeptica was isolated on only two occasions. All these strains came from patients with acute or chronic respiratory infection, and in each case the colonies of the organism were present in large numbers on the primary blood agar plate. Commonly, an equally heavy growth of Hmmophilw injuenzce or Diplococcw, pneumonia wm also present. It could not be determined whether the pasteurella-like organisms were actively pathogenic, but it seemed that they might have had an auxiliary role in the disease process. In some of the cases of chronic bronchitis and bronchiectasis the same organism was re-isolated several months after its first isolation, showing that there may be prolonged carriage in the respiratory tract. A further strain was received at this laboratory for identification, and two strains were kindly provided by Dr G. H. Tee of the Dor-Chester Public Health Laboratory.Of other strains examined for comparison, one representative of each of the four serological types of P. aeptica (AD) were supplied by Dr G. H. Tee, three strains of Pasteurella hcernolytica (no. 9380, 9712, 10218) and one of Actinobacillus equuli (B. equirulis no. 8529) were obtained from the National Collection of Type Cultures, and two serologically representative strains of Actinobacillus lignieresi (A6, A13) were supplied by Mr D. H. Till of the Department of Bacteriology, University of Birmingham.
