Microbial communities regulate various collective functions using molecular signaling circuits known as quorum sensing. Understanding and modeling of quorum sensing regulation is essential to design nano-networks and enable communication and coordination among nano-machines. In this paper, a stochastic queuing model of quorum sensing is developed, inspired by known biological processes. The dynamics of quorum sensing across the bacterial community are investigated analytically. Necessary conditions for population density estimation via quorum sensing are presented. It is shown that the synthesis rate of autoinducers needs to lie within a certain range of values, in order to establish correlation between the local autoinducer concentration within each cell and population density.
