Administration of oestrogenic substances to chicks, pullets or roosters results in rapid and extensive proliferation of membraneous and ribosomal components of the endoplasmic reticula (E.R.) of their livers in preparation for the synthesis of yolk proteins. Under such circumstances, the liver microsomes initially display many of the chemical and enzymatic characteristics previously delineated for rapidly expanding E.R. in the livers of chicken embryos. In addition, it was found that the microsomal fraction (mostly E.R.) is enzymatically related to, and is possibly in equilibrium with, a ‘post-microsomal’ lipoprotein fraction which does not present the same morphology as the conventional membrane. 600R of whole body X-irradiation was found to quickly inhibit proliferation of both liver E.R. and ‘post-microsomal’ elements, as detected by inhibition of normally occurring enzyme changes provoked by oestrogen administration and, in the case of rough E.R., by a reduction in the net synthesis of ribosomal RNA.
