We discuss the holism/reductionism dichotomy with reference to computer science, mathematics, and quantum physics. We argue that the “tower of software” building levels of abstraction provides a more nuanced model of how higher-level concepts arise than crude reductionism. We also argue for the importance of compositionality in this discussion. We then discuss quantum contextuality, and argue that it calls the very existence of an integrated whole in physical reality into question. This is illustrated by a paradoxical Escherian tower.
