Rates of dissociation of carbon dioxide have been measured in radio-frequency discharges operated at 1-10 cal cm-3 s_1, 5-40 Torr, and gas flow rates between 0.1 and 17 1.(STP) min"" 1. A comparison has been made of the experimental rate constants with those calculated from electron energy distribution functions and the excitation cross section with thresholdat 7 eV. Evidence is presented that a mechanism of disso-ciation involving vibrationally excited moleculesmakes a significant contribution to the observed rates and become the dominant one at pressures above^ 20 Torr. At 40 Torr up to 60% of the energy pumped into the vibrational system of CO2 is utilized for dissociation.
