Cerebrovascular disease may be caused by infarction or hemorrhage affecting the brain. Underlying disorders that may be associated with cerebrovascular disease include hypothyroidism, hypertension, sepsis, vascular malformation, and neoplasia. Clinical signs consist of a sudden onset of neurologic deficits referable to a focal lesion in the brain. Diagnosis is based on clinical features and neuroimaging procedures. Treatment consists of maintaining adequate tissue oxygenation, controlling seizures and elevations in intracranial pressure, and treatment of any underlying disorders.
