The cervix in the non-pregnant rat is a compact structure containing 5-10 g/100 g wet weight collagen and only about 20-30% by volume smooth muscle. The cervix of 11- to 12-day pregnant rats does not differ significantly from diestrous animals but from this time on changes become progressive until the end of pregnancy. During pregnancy, the wet weight of the cervix increases about 2.5 times and the total collagen content somewhat less than 2 times. This drop in collagen concentration can not be accounted for by relatively greater growth of smooth muscle than connective tissue as data indicate that the proportion of smooth muscle decreases in pregnancy. Extensibility of the cervical tissue throughout the course of pregnancy is reported in detail.
