Colon cancer is a common disease, and it ranks high in frequency among malignant disorders in the United States population. It is second only to breast cancer in women and lung cancer in men, and it accounted for an estimated 46,000 deaths in 1972.1 The symptoms associated with cancer of the colon are almost always the result of local effects of the tumor in the bowel; however, the tumor may cause distant or “paraneoplastic” symptoms. In this review, both kinds of syndromes will be discussed.
