The eminent probability theorist Mark Iosifovich Freidlin was born in Moscow in 1938. He is best known as one of the founders of the theory of large deviations for random processes, which is among the most striking achievements in probability theory in the last 30–40 years. He also ranks among those mathematicians who have been successful in using a probabilistic approach to solve problems concerning partial differential equations.His parents devoted most of their free time to the upbringing and education of Freidlin and his elder sister, who later became a well-known ophthalmologist. Like many Moscow mathematicians, Freidlin developed his interest for mathematics during activities organized by the mathematicians at Moscow University, in which schoolchildren were taught by students only a few years older than themselves from the Mechanics and Mathematics Department. He was also successful in the Moscow Mathematical Olympiads. He finished school at the age of 16 and was admitted to the Mechanics and Mathematics Department of Moscow State University in 1954. This was the time of a political thaw in the Soviet Union, and of golden years for Moscow mathematics, when many outstanding Moscow mathematicians were in the prime of their creativity.
