The lethality of most cancers can be attributed to'the ability of tumor cells to spread to and proliferate in organs distant from the primary neoplasm. Therefore, the main problem in treating cancer is not the excision of the primary tumor mass, but the elimination of metastases. Despite its clinical importance, the field of cancer metastasis has not attracted the attention accorded other research areas, such as chemical and viral carcinogenesis or tumor immunology. However, newly developed research approaches and instrumentation have stimulated new interest in studies of metastasis.
