I’m not sure who needs to hear this. Perhaps this is a letter, written to a future version of myself. Or maybe it’s a letter that will reach those who remain silent. Who have not yet woken up to the fact that silence is assent. But whatever it is that I am writing here, I should start with where I am and why I am not being silent; how I’ve woken up this morning with such anger and despair I’m finding it hard to know where to put myself, how to hold myself. Yet here I am. Writing from Melbourne, properly known as Naarm or Birrarung-ga because those are the names for and from the heart of this place. Those names refuse to be silenced. They refuse because as Ambelin Kwaymullina (2020) says in her beautiful prose book Living on Stolen Land:
