The incidence of cancer of the thyroid is 0.7 per 100 000 in males and 1.9 per 100 000 in females in the UK. 1 Papillary carcinoma accounts for more than 50% of all cases, followed by follicular carcinoma. Less frequent types are medullary, anaplastic, Hurthle cell and squamous cell carcinoma. About 25% of medullary thyroid carcinomas are familial, caused by defects in the RET oncogene. 2 By contrast, the non-medullary forms of thyroid cancer are not generally thought of as having a familial basis. However, evidence from epidemiological and family studies suggests that a subset of these cancers may also be caused by an inherited predisposition. Identification of the genes or genes may be useful for diagnosis and treatment of those at high risk, as well as serving as a model for thyroid carcinogenesis in general.
