Despite the continuing rise in Japanese women’s rates of participation in the economy, gender division of labor has been accepted as “normal” and still strong. The aim of this paper is to examine whether and how the determinants of married women’s labor force participation have changed. Based upon national sample in 1985, 1995, 2005, and 2015, we analyze change/stability of the factors that differentiate dual-income couples from husband sole provider couples and how these associations have changed over time. Results show that dual-income couples have increased but it is not at a constant rate: it increased at a slow pace until around 2005, and then increased dramatically recently. The results also show that women’s own human capital has not been a determinant of labor participation for married women until recently. Husband’s low income have a significant positive effect on labor force participation of married women, suggesting that high occupational resources of husband drive wife out of the labor market, which has been found in conservative and Mediterranean welfare regimes.
