Difficult airway and dental injury management present unique challenges for the anesthesiologist. Growing rates of obesity and obstructive sleep apnea increase the likelihood that preoperative airway assessment will suggest the need for awake intubation, and such patients are likely to be scheduled for either ambulatory or inpatient surgical procedures. Furthermore, the poor predictive power of standard preoperative physical assessments makes it likely that some difficult laryngoscopies will be encountered in any environment; therefore, the practitioner must be able to emerge the patient after an induction and provide an awake approach to the airway when necessary. In addition, any endotracheal intubation carries the risk of dental injury. Dental injury is a frequent complication, and is the most common reason for lawsuits against anesthesiologists. Hence, it is essential that an anesthesiologist practicing in both the ambulatory and hospital setting
