GARVEY, CATHERINE, and HOGAN, ROBERT. Social Speech and Social Interaction: Egocentrism Revisited. CHILD DEVELOPMENT, 1973, 44, 562-568. To study the development of social speech, 18 dyads of children (31/2-5) were videotaped in 15-minute play sessions. Behavior was coded in terms of the time children spent in mutual interaction, and speech was coded in terms of the degree to which utterances were adapted to the verbal or nonverbal behavior of the partner. The results indicated a high level of mutual responsiveness in both speech and behavior. The paper suggests that children in this age range are capable of genuinely social behavior; it concludes that early forms of social speech entail a surprising level of interpersonal understanding, and that these speech forms are amenable to systematic study.
