Outbreaks of listeriosis are associated with substantial disease burden because numerous patients are involved, with the high case fatality rates characteristic of human listeriosis (20 to 30 percent). Last but not least, timely recognition of outbreaks, along with associated product recalls and consumer alerts, have proven their value in the curtailing of the outbreak (CDC 1998, 1999, 2001; DeValk et al. 2001).
