0003-2700/90/0362-1413 $02.50/0 detection for liquid chromatography or flow injection systems. Common amperometric detectors, based on glassy carbon or carbon paste electrodes, exhibit no response for carbohydrates. Metallic sensing electrodes have thus been used in place of carbon surfaces. Most commonly, pulsed-amperometric de-tection at platinum or gold electrodes, which incorporates cleaning and activation steps along with detection, has gained wide acceptance and commercialization (1, 2). Chemically modified electrodes (CMEs), containing surface-bound redox mediators, have been employed for minimizing overvoltage effects at carbon surfaces. Santos and Baldwin (3) reported a dual-pulse detection of carbohydrates at cobalt phthalocyanine containing carbon paste electrodes. A recent work by the same group (4) has shown that copper-based CMEs yield a stable response for carbohydrates without recourse to a potential pulse sequence.
