This is a brief description of certain methods—some old and some new—of establishing existence in the calculus of variations, confined (for the present purposes) to a setting which seems appropriate for Riemannian geometry. Some of our methods and results have appeared in [4, 5, 6]; our viewpoint overlaps to a certain extent with that (developed essentially simultaneously) of Palais and Smale [17, 18, 23].
