Hovering, forward and backward slow rectilinear locomotion, fast forward progression, turning and up and down movements were described in Rhinecanthus aculeatus and Odonus niger. Movements of the body were discussed in terms of the waveforms on the fins which produced them. Swimming speed was related to the frequency at which waveforms pass down the fins. The power output from the fin ray muscles of R. aculeatus was calculated for slow and fast forward progressions. Values ranged from 1.5 .times. 105 ergs/s at 3.5 cm/s to 3.35 .times. 105 ergs/s at 10.5 cm/s. The swimming of other plectognath teleosts and fusiform fish was discussed.
