Kittens were deprived of light and form by monocular lid suture or by placing a translucent contact occluder over the cornea. In kittens with one lid sutured from birth for 3 months most lateral geniculate cells with input from the deprived eye had normal receptive fields; a few had fields with abnormally large centres. Marked histological changes were seen; mean areas of cells in layers having input from the deprived eye were decreased by up to 40%; nuclei and nucleoli were shrunken. No changes were seen in retinas, optic nerves, superior colliculi or striate cortex. No histological changes were seen in an adult cat monocularly deprived by lid suture for 3 months. Kittens deprived subsequent to birth or for shorter periods showed less severe changes.
