ABSTRACT This research profiles parole violators at large (PVALs) and describes the social, demographic, and criminal history of this group. PVALs, also known as absconders, are compared to those who have never absconded parole. Findings indicate that PVALs have a longer criminal history than non-absconders, mostly for property offenses; absconders tend to have had more parole supervisions, incarcerations, and revocations than non-absconders. Finally, this research provides a one year follow-up of the status of absconders. Essentially, the majority were caught and returned to prison within one year.
