The apparent popularity of direct democracy, survey after survey, contrasts with rising disengagement of citizens from politics. However, as most citizens remain committed to democratic norms and principles part of the rise in discontent can therefore potentially be explained by increased expectations of ‘critical citizens’. Indeed, some argue that such ’dissatised democrats’, citizens who support democracy in the abstract but are unsatised with how it works in practice, are said to be demanding more participatory opportunities and thus supposedly are a cause of the increase in institutionalization and usage of direct democracy. In this I paper I use the European Social Survey Round 6 to bring together citizens’ democratic ideals with their evaluations of actual institutional arrangements, combining it with data on the institutionalization and use of direct democracy in 25 European countries. I provide evidence that citizens do hold meaningful evaluations of the institutionalization of direct democracy in their country.
