We read with great interest the recent article,“Ocular nociception and neuropathic pain initiated by blue light stress in C57BL/6J mice,” by Gao et al. 4 The authors present convincing findings that rodents exposed to 12-hour ambient blue light/12-hour dark cycles can produce nocifensive behaviors and clinical signs consistent with ocular discomfort and dry eye. They also observed an upregulation of TRPV1 and substance P in corneal-projecting neurons in the trigeminal ganglia. These findings represent an important advance for the study of ocular pain in animals. We are writing to challenge the assertion that this model represents “a mouse model of ocular neuropathic pain/computer vision syndrome” using blue light.It is true that this article comes at a time of increasing awareness of “screen time” as deleterious to health and well-being, yet the proposed clinical and scientific relevance of the authors' findings to computer vision syndrome (CVS) seems flawed for the following reasons:
