RESULTSBefore the study of the cortical area 7, we recorded discharges from cells in the hand and face regions of the primary somatosensory area (SI) in front of area 7. As is well known, the activation of many cells in SI requires stimuli that touch the receptive fields of the cells. Recording from area 7, we first tried to activate the cells there in a similar fashion. In the first few experiments, however, an unexpectedly complex nature of the peripheral stimuli which activated area 7 cells was seen, as exemplified by the following observafons. Cutaneous activation from the contralateral side of the face was an effective stimulus for some area 7 cells, but they sometimes discharged action potentials before their peripheral receptive fields had been touched. This" anticipatory activation" was not due to weak air streams set in motion by the approaching stimuli as shown by the fact that the" anticipatory activation" was abolished when the animal was prevented from seeing the approaching
