In rats, the presence of eicosapentaenoic and docosahexaenoic acids in the diet, provided by supplements of menhaden oil, led to the formation of hydroxylated metabolites of these acids. These metabolites were shown to be capable of regulating lipoxygenase activity of platelets and polymorphonuclear leukocytes and to inhibit platelet aggregation.
