MATERIALS AND METHODSThe strain of D. immitis used in all experiments came from a naturally infected beagle bitch maintained for its entire life at the University of California at Davis (McGreevy et al., 1970). Because of continuing experiments adult filariae were not examined and diagnosis of heartworm infection rested on clinical signs, xenodiagnosis, and the morphological properties of microfilariae according to the criteria of Newton and Wright (1957) and Sawyer et al.(1965). The microfilaraemia was not always determined when experimental mosquitoes were provided an infective blood meal, but microfilarial infectivity was always checked by observing normal filarial development in susceptible mosquitoes fed on the heartworm-infected dog. Throughout the 1 t-year period of this study, the microfilaraemia ranged from 146 to 241 microfilariae per 20 pl of peripheral blood. In some experiments a Malayan strain of B. pahangi infecting a beagle bitch and an Ethiopian strain of Dirofilaria corynodes (?= D. aethiops) infecting an Mrican green monkey,
