In larvae ofDrosophila euronotuslarge numbers of eggs of the hymenopterous parasitePseudeucoila bocheido not hatch, and many of the parasite larvae fail to develop beyond the first stage. Parasite mortality in this host is not due to encapsulation reactions that are characteristic of insects and other invertebrates against internal metazoan parasites. None of the dead parasites dissected from their hosts and examined with phase-contrast microscopy was seen enveloped by hemocytes. Most of the dead parasite eggs resembled newly laid eggs with little or no differentiation evident. On some dead parasite larvae pigment, presumably melanin, had been deposited. Since hemocytes are considered to be directly responsible for pigment formation in insects, a different type of hemocytic response was considered to be operative to suppress the development ofP. bochei. Quantitative studies of the hemocytes of host larvae during infection showed marked changes in the percentages podocytes and oencytoids. The significance of these changes and a possible role of the phenoloxidase system in the defense reactions ofD. euronotusare discussed.
