There is considerable evidence to show that in spite of the lack of T cell-mediated immune mechanisms nude mice are able to control the development of tumours and the growth of intracellular micro-organisms. For example, tumour incidence in nudes is comparable to that of the inbred strain providing the background for the nude gene [5] and nude mice have been shown under certain circumstances to be more resistant to infection with Listeria monocytogenes [2] and Candida albicans [1]. Hitherto the role of the macrophage and the implications of the lack of T cells in these im-mune mechanisms has remained unelucidat-ed. We have examined a number of param-eters of peritoneal macrophage activity in both nude and normal mice and we have determined the effect of reconstitution of nude mice with either T cells or thymus tissue derived from syngeneic donors. In addition, we have determined the effect of the microbiological status of the nude mouse upon the degree of macrophage activation.
