The activity of the growth hormone (GH) releasing hormone (GHRH)-GH-insulin-like growth factor (IGF) axis declines with aging, a phenomenon which has been termed the somatopause (Hoffman, Pyka, Lieberman, Ceda and Marcus 1993). The role of estrogen in this decline in women has recently been evaluated. In young adults, GH levels are higher in women than in men, and there is a positive correlation between serum estrogen and GH levels. Both estrogen and progesterone enhance the GH response to the somatostatin-inhibitor, pyridostigmine (O'Keane and Dinen 1992). Plasma IGF-I levels fall immediately after the onset of the menopause (Romagnoli, Minisola, Carnevale, Scarda, Rosso, Scarnecchia, Pacitti and Mazzuoli1993) and mean 24 hour GH and serum IGF-I levels are lower than in premenopausal controls. Oral ethinyl-estradiol increased serum GH, but lowered IGF-I levels (Dawson-Hughes, Stern, Goldman and Reichlin 1986), suggesting a block in GH action at the liver. We have obtained similar IGF-I results in patients taking conjugated estrogens
