Rice is one of the three most important crops in the world, next to wheat in total cultivated area, and to corn in production. The cultivated area is 145×l06ha and production is 466×106Mt (FAO 1985). It evolved in the humid tropics as a semi-aquatic plant. This plant has unique adaptive nature to hot and humid environments and is grown widely in both tropical and temperate regions, over as broad a range as 50°N to 40°S. There are two species of cultivated rice,OryzasativaL. andOryza glaberrimaSteud; the former is a common rice and the latter is endemic to West Africa.O. perennisis considered to be the ancestor ofO.sativa, andO. glaberrimais thought to originate fromO. breviliglata.
