NASA and DoD use ammonium perchlorate (NH4ClO4) salt as an oxidizer in solid rocket propellants. Perchlorate salts are used in several applications such as flares, pyrotechnics, explosives, batteries, and air bag inflators. Large-scale production of perchlorate salts began in the 1940s. NH4ClO4 is the major ingredient (70-75%) in solid rocket propellants. NH4ClO4 is highly soluble in water and completely dissociates to NH4+ and ClO4-. Because of historical handling practices, surface water and ground water contamination with NH4ClO4 has occurred in the western states of California, Nevada, Utah and Arizona. 1 Some information is available on the toxicological properties of ammonium perchlorate. Ammonium perchlorate has been used to treat Grave's disease in humans. 2, 3 Grave's disease results in an overactive thyroid gland leading to hyperthyroidism. The perchlorate ion (ClO4-) slows an overactive thyroid gland by inhibiting the uptake of iodide into the thyroid gland.
