There seems to be a general consensus among trade economists that the phenomenon of intra-industry trade is linked directly to imperfect competition and economies of scale. Among the different theoretical explanations of intra-industry trade, the various models based on product differentiation in the presence of scale economies have obtained the highest level of popularity. This is possibly the case because the notion that intra-industry trade is linked to product differentiation had been postulated a decade before models of the new trade theory established the link formally in the late 1970s.This chapter focuses on the literature of intra-industry trade in homogeneous products. Since we already know from casual observations that most economic transactions±at both national and international levels±take place in goods and services that are anything but homogeneous, a first reaction would be to classify these theories as having little or no empirical content. Unfortunately, thisfirst reaction'has become a commonly held view by many trade economists. One of the aims of this chapter is to convince the reader that the models of intra-industry trade in homogeneous products can play a very useful role in helping us to obtain a more complete understanding of the phenomenon of intra-industry trade. In this respect, it is important to remind ourselves of the purpose of the homogeneity assumption in all economic models: analytical tractability. Instead, the theoretical literature on intraindustry trade in homogeneous products should be viewed as a research agenda that focuses on economic environments where taste for variety (that is, horizontal product differentiation) or product quality (that is,
