A case of reversible gene alteration is discussed in which the DNA specifying the sequences for 28S and 18S ribosomal RNA''s (rRNA) has been selectively replicated. This specific amplification of genes for ribosomal RNA (termed rDNA) occurs in 1 cell type-the oocytes; this amplification has been demonstrated in the oocytes of several amphi-bians, and echiuroid worm and the surf clam.
