The book provides a modem review of the pharmacology of calcium in the body and its role in cardiovascular disease. The pharmacology of calcium antagonist drugs is then reviewed together with their use in patients with angina pectoris, myocardial infarction, arrhythmias, and hypertension. The use of nifedipine in combination with beta-adrenoreceptor antagonists is reviewed. The last two chapters are by R. Krebs and A. Schwartz, and present their views of the current and future uses of this relatively new family of drugs.Overall, this is a superb volume, and it is one of the most authoritative books on the subject yet available. It is reasonably up-to-date with frequent 1981 references, occasional 1982 references, and a few 1983 references. It contains excellent diagrams, illustrations, and tables. I would recommend this book for all medical libraries and for all-particularly cardiologists, research physicians, pharmacologists, or postgraduate students-desiring more information on calcium ion movements and the effects of calcium antagonists. It is excellent.
