Determined the effects of patient education and counseling interventions compared with current recommended care on cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) and physical activity (PA). 395 women and 479 men (aged 35–75 yrs) who were inactive and in stable health were interviewed about PA and assigned to one of 3 intervention groups (advice, assistance, or counseling). The advice group received brief physician advice and written educational materials. The assistance group received the same treatment plus a health educator conducted behavioral counseling sessions. Further, an interactive e-mail, newsletter with postage-paid reply card, and an electronic step-counter were provided. Ss in the counseling group received the same treatment plus regular behavioral and telephone counseling. For women, the assistance and the counseling groups were similar in significantly increasing CRF, resulting in an approximately 5% higher maximal oxygen uptake at 2-year follow-up than in the advice group. Neither the counseling or assistance groups had a greater effect on total reported PA than that observed in the advice group. For men, neither the assistance nor counseling groups improved CRF or total PA significantly above the level achieved by the advice group.(PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)
