Intakes were measured in daily periods, in rats furnished food that was mixed with diverse proportions of cellulose, kaolin, or water. In most mixtures, the total bulk eaten was increased, but the utilizable nutrients thus gained were somewhat diminished. By the mixtures, rats were regularly induced to ingest roughages to the extent of 8% of their body wts./day, and water up to 125%/day. Expts. indicated that the upper limit of water ingestion was not fixed by the maximal rate at which water could be excreted through the kidneys. A variety of flavorings and nutrients in small concns. did not induce rats to consume greater amts. of roughages. After complete or partial privation of food for 1-6 days, body wt. was subsequently partially restored with the consumption of little or no excesses of food. Deficits of food and water intakes were not paid off, but expenditures were reduced for one or more days. Thus reproducible compromises were reached among maintenance of body wt., intake of food, and intake of water.
