Fibroblasts in cultures of newt tissues were observed alive and after fixation and staining with either May-Griinwald and Giemsa stains, or a mixture of methyl green and pyronine at pH 4.5. In late anaphase and in telophase transient protuberances or "bubbling" appear at the surface of the cell; these are not peculiar to tissue cultures. The protuberances are related temporally to nuclear changes and spatially to the chromosomes in ways that suggest that they arise in response to an agent released by the chromosomes. The staining of the fibroblasts suggests the possibility that a ribonucleoprotein may be the agent responsible for "bubbling".
