C2H5 (etz), n-C3H7 (ptz), and j'-C3H7 (iptz), have been synthesized earlier and found in preliminary studiesto undergo a temperature-dependent high-spin (5T2)— low-spin (’AJ transition. We reporthere on a more detailed characterization of the spin transition behavior using Mossbauer, magnetic susceptibility, and far-infrared spectroscopy at variable temperatures. The spin transition in the ptz complex induces a first-order phase transition with structural reordering in the vicinity of the iron center. The same phenomenon occurs in a zinc-diluted mixed crystal. A temperature-dependentspin transition also occurs in the mtz, etz, and iptz complexes but appears to be more gradual and incomplete; from the present studies there is no indication of a structural phase transition.
