The belief has become quite general that the efferent pathways of the sympathetic nervous system are made up of preganglionic and postganglionic neurons. In other words, the efferent sympathetic pathway is regarded as bineuronic. The nervous mechanism of the gut, however, appears to be considered by many writers as an exception to this plan of structure. The possibility of a third neuron in the chain has been considered, but most of the disagreement appears to center about the question of the existeiice of an iiidependent nervous mechanism in the gut wall and the probable nature of its Structure, whether a primitive syncytial nervenetwork or merely a plexus of nerve fibers such as usually found in sympathetic ganglia. The writer wishes to present in this paper, without further discussion of the already muchreviewed literature on this subject, the results of some observations which appear to indicate that the structure and structural relations of the myenteric plexus is on the same plan as that of all other sympathetic ganglia and plexuses.
