The book ends with essays that examine institutional contexts writ large. Claudio Ciborra and Leslie Schneider ("Transforming the Routines and Contexts of Management, Work, and Technology") argue that embedded cultural assumptions, which they term the "formative context," typically inhibit organizations from learning what they need to know in order to make the most of technological transitions. In "Innovation and Institutions: Notes on the Japanese Paradigm," Thomas Lifson describes how the Japanese have made more use than any other country of interorganizational networks to facilitate innovation. Lifson's paper is particularly noteworthy for its concise history of Japan's industrial structures.
