Excision of the brachial somites in Amblystoma embryos is followed by the incomplete and irregular segmentation of the spinal ganglia, by an atypical arrangement of the brachial nerves and by the occasional complete loss of one or more of these nerves. Limbs with a reduced no. of nerves are capable of performing normal movements. By interpolating 1 or 2 supernumerary mesodermic segments dorsal to the limb rudiment, the no. of ganglia and brachial nerves may be correspondingly increased. In such cases the limb may be supplied by 4 or 5 spinal nerves instead of the typical no. (3). The production of supernumerary spinai nerves by merely interpolating additional mesodermic somites is offered as substantial exp. proof of the view proposed by Lehmann, ''27 (see B. A. 2(6/8): 13982) and its previous support by the author, that the segmentation of spinal ganglia and associated nerves is subservient to mesodermal metamerism. Causes for variations in the segmental nerve contribution to the brachial plexus in different groups of vertebrates are discussed.
