Ever since the major histocompatibility complex (MHC)-linked immune response genes (/r-genes) were described by McDevitt and Benacerraf in mice and guinea pigs (McDevitt & Chinitz 1969, Benacerraf & McDevitt 1972, McDevitt & Benacerraf 1969), it has been widely assumed that the HLA-linked /r-genes or HLA-linked immune suppression genes (/j'-genes) exist in humans. This unproven hypothesis has been used by many investigators to explain the mechanisms of their fmdings of statistical association between HLA and diseases. In this paper we present clear evidence for the existence of HLA-linked /j-genes and their crucial roles in pathogenesis of autoimmune disease and allergy.
