The Black Sea covers an area of 432 000 km2 and is the largest anoxic basin in the world. The most recent sediment layers can be divided into three units: Unit I, the top approximately 30 cm, is a micro-laminated sediment, rich in plankton-derived carbonates, with relatively low levels of organic carbon; Unit II (c. 30–70 cm) is a microlaminated sapropel deposited under anoxic marine conditions; Unit III (below approximately 70 cm), characterised by mix of organic-poor clays and silts. The natural vegetation of the central Bulgarian Black Sea coast is part of the Euxinian province of the European deciduous forests. The eastern Balkan Range area (Eastern Stara Planina Mountains) is characterised by the dominance of temperate forest communities with a prevalence of Quercus cerris L. and Q. frainetto Ten.
