Like the blind men whose elephant assumed different shapes depending upon what part of it they groped at, various disciplines and action groups perceive alcohol-ism differently, depending upon their training and self-interest. Perhaps these differences in perceptions would be merely academic in consequence were it not that the various differences are directly related to wide differences in emphasis in etiology and particularly in treatment and prevention efforts.(p. 525)
